🥂 New Year's Eve Style Guide: From Casual to Formal, What to Wear for Every New Year’s Eve Plan.

by Lisa Oberst 25 Dec 2024

Family of eleven standing on steps holding champagne.

Mariah Carey and Michael Bublé have officially entered the chat, which means the holiday season is here! And with that, New Year's Eve will be here before we know it. For me, New Year's Eve is the perfect excuse to get dressed up, spend time with loved ones, and, of course, dance the night away (if you've been here a while, you know I can't resist hitting the dance floor).

Whether you want to ring in the new year dressed up, or you're planning to welcome 2025 cozy on the couch, I've picked out New Year's Eve outfit ideas for every occasion.

From casual to formal, I have you covered.

New Year’s Eve Outfit Ideas By The Occasion.

Dinner Plans:

Dinner is a great way to celebrate the new year—I'm French, so a nice dinner is always the answer. 😉 It's low-key, you can enjoy a few drinks, and still get home at a decent hour. Or, dinner can be just the beginning of the night—dine and drink, then head out to a club or a New Year’s event. I have two outfit options: one for the dinner-and-go-home girls, and another for the dinner-and-let's-hit-the-town girls. Both are comfortable, so you’ll feel great all night long.

Trousers are an elegant and comfortable way to dress up on new years eve. I love the idea of pairing trousers with a long sleeve festive top that's sequined or satin. It's also New Year’s Eve so we can’t sleep on the accessories. A bold pair of shoes (Womads has an incredible color collection btw!) statement earrings, and a standout bag will make your outfit pop—while still keeping things simple, and elegant for New Year's Eve. I paired a darker look with a bright pair of our Fuschia Peep Toe Flats. What I love about this outfit is it's easy to throw together, perfect for just dinner or you can head out to a comedy show or New Year’s event afterwards.

I’m a big dress girl – I love bright colors and fun patterns. I especially love how comfortable dresses are. They’re flowy and easy to move in, making them the perfect choice for a simple yet feminine New Year’s Eve look. If you're heading out after dinner, pair your dress with a wool jacket, a trench coat, or an oversized blazer, and you're ready! Our Gold Oxfords pair perfectly with a pink shiny dress, I love the way the colors work together. Made from full-grain leather, these Oxfords are breathable and comfy enough to wear all night long.

If you’re looking for a heel option, check out my go-to dress shoe blog, where I break down my favorite dress shoes to wear both during the day and into the night!

Going out into town

What I love about New Year's Eve is how many different events you can choose from. From comedy shows to dance clubs, there's always something happening and lots of opportunities to get dressed up.

If you're heading out to a New Year's celebration, a sparkly skirt paired with a simple, form-fitting neutral top or bodysuit is a chic way to party for the new year. Skirts are great because if you're in a cooler climate, you can easily add nylons, which only enhance the look. When it comes to shoes, I love matching them to some element of your outfit—it ties everything together and adds a polished touch. I paired this outfit with my new Black Womads Oxfords. The new closed toe leather shoe is designed to be comfortably worn all night.

If you're more of a jeans person, you can easily make them work for a night out. The simplicity of jeans gives you the perfect opportunity to have fun with your top. Pair your favorite straight-leg jeans with a lace, satin or sparkly top to add some glam. If you live in a cooler climate, a fun way to dress it up is to add an oversized blazer. I love the idea of mixing business wear with a fun night out, there is a girl boss vibe to it that I'm obsessed with.

When you have a more simple outfit, have fun with the shoes and accessories. It is a subtle way to add a pop of color for the new year. I paired this look with our Golden Nectar Peep Toe Womads for a subtle shine that does not overpower or take away from the outfit, it just compliments them.

The one where they get together

I love the intimacy of small get-togethers — it makes you feel like you're on Friends. If these are your New Year’s Eve plans you can also add fun New Year’s Eve-themed accessories and decorations to make the event super cozy and festive. You can find a ton of themed decorations and accessories on Amazon that are affordable and set the vibe. You can also scavenge local boutiques to see what holiday themed candles, garlands, and decorations they've picked out.

Now, let’s talk about styling. You want to be cozy, I get it, but you might also want to dress up a little! The good news is, you can do both:

A simple black skort paired with a white bodysuit (I’m obsessed with my Skims bodysuit — it’s so soft and comfy) with nylons is a great way to dress up while still staying comfortable. What's great about the skort is the shorts built in, so you can sit comfortably on the couch or on the rug if you're like me and like to be on the floor around the coffee table while hanging out with friends. You can also pair this look with bright Womads to dress it up. Their lightweight nature keeps the look comfy while the design of the shoe is meant to compliment your foot and legs. You can also easily slip them on and off if your hosts prefer no shoes in the house.

If skorts aren’t your thing and you’re staying in, I’ve got you covered. I’m all about a two-piece set—they’re fun, put-together, and super easy. This season, I'm seeing tons of two-piece options, from full sequins to simple wool, so whatever the vibe of your get-together is, you can still be comfy while looking dressed up.

I am a sucker for a monochromatic look so if you're going full sequin maybe pair it with our Silver Womads! The peep toe sandals are so easy to slip on and off at the front door and they will stand out if there are lots of shoes kicking around.

New Year’s Eve Accessories

Some outfits speak for themselves, others need accessories to do that talking. Regardless of your category these accessories work for each just customize the color to fit your vibe.

Hands free, crossbody bags

I travel light no matter where I am going. My first accessory has to be a crossbody bag for all your essentials. New Year’s Eve can be a long night so being able to carry your bag and not worry about setting it down is a gamechanger.

I of course will plug my own product here, my brand new leather crossbody bags. To no one's surprise they also made my travel accessories blog but that's because I only make products I can’t stop raving about.  Best part, the straps are interchangeable so you can customize the look of this bag based around your New Year’s Eve outfit.

Pair of simple hoops

I love small, simple hoops — they’re so elegant. They add a feminine touch without being overpowering, and they look great whether your hair is sleeked back or fully down, just peeking out.

If you're not usually an earring person and don't want to spend too much, you can easily find little inexpensive studs online or in local independent boutiques. Or, if you want to dip your toes into accessories but aren’t ready to fully invest yet, my social media coordinator swears by Oak and Fort accessories. They’re affordable yet elegant, a perfect balance if you’re looking to experiment without the commitment.
