Thereâs nothing quite like a road trip⊠but a comfortable road trip. Iâve always been a huge travelerâmost of my adventures start with a passport and a boarding pass but road trips are special and just as exciting. When it comes to the road the journey is part of the trip. You have the flexibility to stop whenever, but if they arenât done right they can be super uncomfortable and frustrating.Â
As the holidays roll in, road travel might be how you are traveling this year. Whether youâre heading home for the season or planning a spontaneous weekend getaway, this guide will help you pack smart and travel comfortablyâwithout overthinking it.
Comfort First: What to Wear & Bring
1. Dress Smart (and Comfy)
Loose, breathable layers are non-negotiable. I love a looser bottom with a crop top, the combo is so cute if we need to make a spot and photo opportunity arises while also being super comfortable. A huge tip is if you are driving through different climates, bring layers that are easy to throw on and off. Â
A lightweight jacket or cardigan can make all the difference.
2. Easy-On, Easy-Off Shoes
Speaking of things that are easy to take on and off, shoes that are easy to slide on and off will make stops and sight seeing a breeze. And I mean yes, crocs are comfortable but something like Womads are cute and comfortable and will look great in a roadside photo.Â
Youâll thank yourself for packing footwear that holds up through coffee stops and spontaneous scenic stops.
You want to grab a pair that is also breathable. Nothing worse than having sweaty feet, it's super uncomfortable and makes me feel so irritated.Â
3. Your âWithin Reachâ Bag
This is your MVP. Keep a small, easy-access bag closeâideally one you can reach without unbuckling your seatbelt. For me, I load it with the essentials: snacks, water bottle, lip balm, hand sanitizer, tissues, and phone charger.
I always bring a roomy tote and keep it at my feet for bulkier items and snacks. I then always keep my Womads Crossbody on hand for essentials like my wallet, phone, and lip balm.Â
4. Neck Pillow and Blanket
Never underestimate the power of being cozy. A neck pillow and lightweight blanket can transform your seat into a makeshift bedâespecially helpful if youâre trying to nap between destinations.

And if you have a sensitive lower back or tailbone (I struggle with sciatica from an old injury), a soft pillow to sit on is a game-changer. On my last trip, I brought a down pillow for extra cushion, and it completely changed the game and it's in no means too extra. I had zero tailbone pain, and I actually enjoyed the entire ride.
Keep the Vibes Right: Music & Podcasts
5. Build a Great Playlist (or Two)
Music sets the tone. Whether youâre in a nostalgic mood or need high-energy jams to stay alert, having playlists ready saves time and keeps spirits high. I love using my Spotify Discoverâit always seems to hit perfectly, blending songs I know and new ones I end up loving.
For a smooth ride always download your playlists in advance, especially if youâll be driving through areas with spotty service.
6. Download Podcasts Ahead of Time
Not everyone in the car wants the same thing. When I'm not listening to my daily mixtape presented by Spotify I love the podcast, Diary of a CEO. I love feeling like Iâm learning something new, even while on the road.
Also, always bring headphones. Sometimes the best way to rest or reset is to plug in and zone outâespecially helpful if youâre trying to sleep while others are chatting or listening to something else.
Entertainment That Travels Well
7. Bring a Book (or an e-Reader)
If youâre not driving, this is the perfect time to dive into a book. Bring a paperback or load your Kindle with a few options so you're never stuck.
If you ask which I would recommend, it would always be an E-Reader. I do love holding a physical book but for traveling, the E-Reader is lighter and easier to pack.
8. Pack a Road Trip Game (or use Google)Â
Thereâs nothing like a game to turn long stretches of road into memory-making time. I love those card games that have you laughing hystericallyâIncoherent is one of my favorites.
For something a little deeper, weâll often search âtop deep conversation questionsâ and pull from a list. It leads to some of the best, most unexpected conversations. Not your vibe? Try trivia instead.
9. Journal/ Get Scrappy
Bring a small notebook and jot down thoughts, stops, and favorite moments. I like to tape in Polaroids or print photos along the wayâbasically building a little scrapbook in the car.
Itâs a creative way to pass by the time and have a keepsake after the trip.Â
Final Touch: Travel-Friendly Extras
-
Snacks: Think balancedâfruits, protein bars, trail mix, and of course a sweet treat.
-
Sunglasses & SPF: Yes, even inside the car. Sun glare is real, you gotta protect your skin.
-
A plastic bag: A few plastic bags for wrappers or anything you need to help keep your space clean and clutter free.Â
-
Wet Wipes: I also like to bring wet wipes in case there are spills, or you just want to give the car a good refresh.
